My Approach to Tutoring
I believe any person can grasp a concept when it is presented in a way that caters to his or her learning style and environmental preference. Not only do I want to help young people achieve academically, I want to help them get to know themselves better in order for them to build confidence and continue that success throughout their academic career. I start with giving students a short Multiple Intelligences Survey to identify the learning styles they most and least identify with.
When it comes to English and the humanities, I like to focus on engaging the student with their own reactions to the reading before focusing on assigned work and/or test preparation. I find that when a student feels an individual connection with a text, he or she is more likely to feel confident with its accompanying assigned written work and/or testing.
With math, I emphasize being patient and finding new ways to explain concepts until it clicks with a student. I don't believe that anyone is bad at math; rather, I believe that everyone has their own way of understanding mathematical concepts.
I look forward to hearing from you!
