My Approach to Tutoring
As a tutor my first objective is to assess my student's self confidence. I find that by encouraging a student to let go of anxiety, the task at hand becomes less of an ordeal and more of a rewarding challenge. I do this by getting to know my students personally, communication with parents, and lots of patience. I make it clear to my students that they are the ones who dictate the pace of a lesson, not me. After all, the classic student's complaint in the classroom setting is "my teacher goes too fast!"
Another strategy I employ is teaching my students that the work they get done on their own is more important than the work that we do together. At the end of every lesson I make sure to help the student plan out their studying for the next week. By having a clear idea of how to best tackle the week's work students become much more sure of their ability to succeed academically.
I have so enjoyed sharing my passion for sciences with my students as well as my love of learning in general. I hope that I can share this enthusiasm with you as well.
