My Approach to Tutoring
My name is Raphael Enow. I am originally from Cameroon, which used to be a French and English Colony. I started tutoring during High School in 1998. I taught Algebra I and II at the High School portion of St. Joseph College, Sasse for 3 years. Since then I have tutored at many places.
My tutoring style is very unique: I call it the "20-minutes-to-hit" approach. It works like magic.
First 20 minutes: Diagnosis and Foundational Concepts
Second 20 minutes: Feet-wetting Problem Solving
Third 20 minutes: Mastering Problems
I usually start with a series of diagnostic problems to test the student's knowledge of the subject. I have come to realize the we understand new concepts in relationship to what we know. Then, I go over the concepts the student is required to learn. After this, I solve one or two problems with the student. At this point, I let the student try a series of problems that have increasing complexity. The whole idea about the 20-minutes-to-hit is to get the student to start working independently as soon as possible, so I can diagnose most of his/her weaknesses. Most of the student's mistakes and errors can be spotted and corrected as the student progresses with problem solving. The last phase is to get the student to solve problems with little or no intervention. My end goal is for my student to master the subject.
Secondly, I encourage all my students to talk. I listen actively to identify errors, confusion, misunderstandings, or misconceptions.
Finally, I flavor all my tutoring sessions with fun and humor to create a relaxing atmosphere and to engage my tutees.
