My Approach to Tutoring
Teaching students one-on-one, I tailor each lesson to the needs and interests of the student. I use creative methods to teach, such as giving ESL students “listening” homework using podcasts, reading children’s books as a jumping off point with my literacy and writing students, and giving my writing students a true variety of assignments to detect their weaknesses. My approach is rooted in my work in the late 90's as a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa, when I learned how to connect with all kinds of people and how to really listen. I have a strong interest in working with children, non-native speakers, and adults struggling with literacy and/or writing. I have a good listening ear and a strong motivation to help people want to learn. I have experience working with writing students in many formats, including timed writing, college essays, personal statements, resumés, and more. There are different kinds of learners and I am sensitive to each student's needs and natural strengths.
