My Approach to Tutoring
I believe the best approach to tutoring is the technique of gradual release of responsibility. I believe in the model, "I do, we do, you do". I believe every child has a different learning style and the best technique is to first model the concept or skill that is being taught. Then together we practice the skill until I am confident the child is ready to be independent. Once the child has mastered a skill independently he or she is ready for the next building block. Mastery is key and is very important before continuing on to more rigorous activities.
I am also a believer that every child has a different learning style that must be identified and the teacher must adapt to. For example, a large majority of children are visual learners and learn by doing. It would be much more beneficial to provide visual activities rather than the student only listen to what the teacher is saying. Hands-on learning experiences are very vital and are proven to have a higher rate of retention when compared to lecture or solely reading a text. I am committed to meeting the needs of all learners.
